    Dal Lake, Kashmir, India

A fisherman enjoys a cherished puff during a short morning break.Kashmir’s famous Dal Lake supplies many local residents with their livelihoods. The fishing communities begin work in the early morning, in search of a species of trout which is unique to this area. The fish fetches good prices both from local buyers and large numbers of tourists, many of whom travel here from the plains and rarely have an opportunity to sample this variety of fish.

One of an estimated one million Maasai, who live a semi-nomadic life in the great Rift Valley of Sub-Sahara Africa. Proud and noble, these people carry a deep ancestry rich in stories of their migration from Sudan beginning in the 15th century. This woman, who stopped mid-gate and posed without request for anything in return, struck eye contact that sent a shiver of “generations” before her down my spine. The sun rises through the thick fog over Xuanwu Lake, Nanjing. To me, this image typifies the morning experience around the lake: calm, tranquil, serene. Integral to this scene is the eerie, dense, fog (more
likely smog) that is omnipresent in modern Chinese cities. So while this image paints a picture of a more traditional China, it is also, in fact, representative of the conflict of modern progress with the Chinese natural environment.

Within two days, I went from scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef at 52 feet below sea level to jumping out of a plane that was 14,000 feet up, right over the reef as well! Personally I have a great fear of heights and no one thought I would be able to do it; I was shaking the entire time and was so scared I really don’t even remember jumping out of the plane. I came too halfway through the free-fall (which lasted 1 minute). We landed right on that beach shown in the picture (Mission Beach).

In March 2008, the Fentelle Region, like much of the Eastern part of Ethiopia, was suffering from a severe drought. Water catchments, ponds and even rivers were rapidly drying up. Here in Gulcha, a diesel pump worked to supply well water for thousands of waiting animals. Some Kereyu herdsmen travelled for two days to bring their animals—cows, goats, donkeys, camels—to the water point. Yet, the animals waited patiently for their turn, and for the signal of their small keeper to go up to the trough and slake their thirst. “The animals understand the problem,” we were told.

    41. "Stilt Fisherman"
    Unawatuna, Sri Lanka

A stilt fisherman finishes up his morning fishing near Unawatuna, Sri Lanka. Stilt fishing is a unique, unobtrusive style of fishing; fishermen sit atop small poles that protrude from the reefs and rocks over the water. Today, it is a dying art; it seems there are as many “pretend” fishermen doing demonstrations for tourists as real stilt fisherman. Tourism is a double-edged sword in that it may help preserve the image of stilt fishing and bring in tourism dollars for the fishermen yet it may result in stilt fishing being a completely unauthentic experience (purely for show) in the near future.
